2 May 2009 - John Della Bosca MLC Minister for Health Minister for the Central Coast Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council

Patient care and safety enters the digital age

NSW Minister for Health, John Della Bosca, announced today that the State Government had started rolling out new electronic medical records (eMR)s technology into public hospitals across the State to help improve patient care and safety.

The Minister said the new technology would also make it easier for doctors and nurses to track the condition of patients through the health system as hospital information would be linked between facilities via eMRs.

“The $100 million project will be rolled out to 188 hospitals across the State by the end of 2010,” Mr Della Bosca said.

“The new eMR replaces many existing paper records and makes secure patient information available to authorised clinicians from computer workstations across the hospital.

“A major benefit of the eMR program is the completeness of patient data and information on medical orders."

Global Managing Partners Summit - exclusive report!

The Inaugural Global Managing Partners Summit held recently by Chilli Marketing in London was a resounding success, with Managing Partners being represented from Law Firms in the UK, Europe, South Africa, India, UAE & The US. The two day summit covered some key topics and opened the floor to many discussions by the delegates.

The Law Society Gazette ran the following article immediately after the event:

When times are tough, it’s good to talk – no matter how big or how tough you think you are. But the annual Global Managing Partners Summit in London, chaired by Law Society vice-president Robert Heslett and /Gazette/ editor Paul Rogerson, kicked off with an observation that this year’s financial reporting season has been marked by an uncharacteristic bashfulness about releasing results. The reasons are fairly obvious. Tony Williams, principal at legal management consultancy Jomati, predicted that reported revenues would fall by up to 15% among the UK’s top firms...

How About Some Real Progress with Secure, Accesible Medical Records?

Probably the most cost effective path , meaning the best business case, for introducing electronic patient records, is to start with ePrescriptions.
I say this firstly because infrastructure already exists, and secondly because the lengthy list of benefits implies substantial efficiencies and cost savings. There are benefits to the Prescribing Physician, the Pharmacist, and of course the Patient.

Today’s technology delivers highly secure, fast and accurate patient identification and authenticated information exchange.
The necessary infrastructure already installed we all use today, secure terminals in pharmacists and medical practices (the EFTPOS device), and we all make good use of the Web.
Databases can readily be secured through high levels of encryption and access rules.

The issue is NOT technology.

Let’s see some sound policy that enables those organizations keen to deliver the services be empowered to implement.
Let’s see consensus between the pharmacists and the medicos on the solution.

The ID token carried by the patient need only contain location details for current scripts, and possibly some 2 years+ history of former scripts.

Some of these cards (but not all) can already contain keys, or identifiers, that enable authorized and authenticated access to the secure data, the prescription!.
